Chapter 6 Overview: Science of Practicing

Each week, every student should observe at least one lesson or masterclass, either in person or online. Take notes about any effective or ineffective teaching moments you notice.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learners will be able to describe foundational strategies for effective, deliberate practice.
  2. Learners will be able to apply techniques such as chunking, interleaved practice, spaced practice, and mental practice in their own playing and teaching.
  3. Learners will be able to explain strategies for practicing intonation and rhythmic pulse, including the use of drones, tuners, metronomes, and Bach chorales.
  4. Learners will be able to describe how solfege, audiation, and the Kodály method strengthen musical understanding and internal hearing.
  5. Learners will be able to apply strategies for learning fast passages, including interleaved clicking-up and varied rhythm/articulation practice.
  6. Learners will be able to structure a spaced practice plan for learning new music and use recording and self-evaluation as tools for performance preparation.
